What exactly is Betrothal?
A Betrothal is an establishment of the marriage covenant. Many people have different definitions of Betrothal, ours is: “A covenant marriage made between and man a woman in the presence of their families, they are separated for a time, until the groom’s father tells his son to return for the bride, at which time there is a wedding celebration.”
In Genesis 24 we see a type of Betrothal between Isaac and Rebekah.
We were legally married at our betrothal ceremony. In Matthew 1:18-19, you can see that there was some sort of legal agreement between Mary and Joseph, because he wanted to divorce her when he found she was pregnant.
A Betrothal is a picture of Yeshua returning for His Bride. There are several bible passages that mention us being the Bride of Messiah Ephesians 5:25-27
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and
gave Himself for her to make her holy, cleansing
her with the washing of water by the word. He did this to
present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything
like that, but holy and blameless.
There is a time of separation, and the Bridegroom returns at an unknown time.
In Matthew 5:1-13 The ten virgins did not know when the Bridegroom was coming.
In this day and age, it would be difficult to not have any idea when the groom could come, so we are setting
one evening aside for this purpose.
Why are you married but still living with your parents?
Because just as Yeshua (Jesus) is preparing a place for us right now, my husband is building a house right now.
When it is finished, he will return for me and we will have a wedding celebration (in September).
I will move to Arkansas after the wedding in September.
During this time, Joe and I are writing letters to each other.
At the Wedding, we will have a deeper explanation, along with telling the story of how it all came about. There will also be feasting and dancing for the celebration.
Everyone’s situation is different, there are many scripture passages that mention betrothal and marriage, I would encourage you and your family to study it out for yourselves.
Here are some links that might help explain a little better, though we did not follow any of them completely.
